Historical Roots

The name “Shimoga” is steeped in legend and lore. One story suggests it originates from “Shiva-Mukha,” meaning “Face of Shiva,” inspired by a tale where Lord Shiva drank water from the Tunga River. Another interpretation links the name to “Sihi-Mogge,” meaning “Sweet Pot.”

Historically, Shimoga was a southern outpost of Emperor Ashoka’s Mauryan Empire in the 3rd century BCE. Over the centuries, it saw the reigns of the Kadambas, Chalukyas, Rashtrakutas, Hoysalas, and Vijayanagara rulers. Later, the Nayakas of Keladi, an influential dynasty, ruled the region until their defeat by Hyder Ali in 1763, after which it became part of the Kingdom of Mysore.

During India’s freedom movement, Shimoga played its role as Mahatma Gandhi visited to inspire local participation in the Satyagraha. Post-independence, it merged into the state of Mysore, which was later renamed Karnataka. The city itself was officially renamed Shivamogga in 2014.

Geography and Nature

Covering an area of about 50 square kilometers, Shimoga is part of the verdant Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its biodiversity. The Tunga River, which meanders through the city, is not just a scenic delight but also its primary source of drinking water, thanks to the Gajanuru Dam.

With nearly 11% of its land under green belts and 7% covered by water, Shimoga’s commitment to preserving nature is evident. Its climate and geography make it an inviting destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.

Shimoga effortlessly blends its historical legacy with the aspirations of a smart city, making it a unique and captivating place in Karnataka.
